Inside the Poker Mind: Essays on Hold 'em and General Poker Concepts

Inside the Poker Mind: Essays on Hold 'em and General Poker ConceptsPoker is a game of many skills and to become an expert poker player you need to master them all. This includes concepts such as hand selection, position, proper image projection, and reading hands. However, there are many players who have mastered most of these skills yet they still do poorly in the games — at best they are only small winners. And when they step up in limit and challenge the better players, they almost always fail. You see, knowing the concept is one thing, putting it all together is another.

As the text will show, winning poker is a process that requires a lot of thinking as well as a thorough and systematic approach to the game, and that is what this book is about. Topics include "Playing Too Many Hands," "Self-Weighting Cold Calls," "Short-Handed Play: Don’t Miss Out," "The Strategic Moment in Hold ’em," "Countering a Good Reader," "A Poker Player in Therapy," and "Thoughts on the Effects of the Poker Literature." The Mathematics of Poker

The Mathematics of PokerIn the late 1970s and early 1980s, the bond an option markets were dominated by traders who had learned their craft by experience. They believed that there experience and intuition for trading were a renewable edge; this is, that they could make money just as they always had by continuing to trade as they always had. By the mid-1990s, a revolution in trading had occurred; the old school grizzled traders had been replaced by a new breed of quantitative analysts, applying mathematics to the "art" of trading and making of it a science. Similarly in poker, for decades, the highest level of pokers have been dominated by players who have learned the game by playing it, "road gamblers" who have cultivated intuition for the game and are adept at reading other players' hands from betting patterns and physical tells. Over the last five to ten years, a whole new breed has risen to prominence within the poker community. Applying the tools of computer science and mathematics to poker and sharing the information across the Internet, these players have challenged many of the assumptions that underlie traditional approaches to the game. One of the most important features of this new approach is a reliance on quantitative analysis and the application of mathematics to the game. The intent of this book is to provide an introduction to quantitative techniques as applied to poker and to a branch of mathematics that is particularly applicable to poker, game theory. There are mathematical techniques that can be applied for poker that are difficult and complex. But most of the mathematics of poker is really not terribly difficult, and the authors have sought to make seemingly difficult topics accessible to players without a very strong mathematical background.

Psychic Poker

Psychic PokerPoker is a game of skill and chance. Some say it is 50-50%, while others say it is 70-30%. You are told to ignore the "chance" element and focus purely on "skill" because it will pay out over the longer run. In time, however, even seasoned professionals find that they have reached the peak in terms of skill - and they resign themselves to just playing their best game. What if you could control the "chance" element in poker? Would that improve your game? This book defines that "chance" component as being composed of luck, intuition, and foresight. Human beings possess a subtle energy field that envelops the physical body. When activated, it is capable of manufacturing luck and producing remarkably accurate powers of intuition and foresight. Beneath the deceptive fabric of everyday reality, energy fields continually wage wars to determine who "gets lucky." Individuals who possess active energy fields will dominate those with passive energy fields. How can you activate your energy field and put it to use at the poker table? This book provides the answers. Author Sunil Padiyar offers an engaging study of both the scientific and spiritual aspects of luck, intuition and foresight. He takes the reader on a riveting journey from the modern theories of Quantum Physics to the metaphysical theories of the ancient Hindu Upanishads (written as far back as in the first millennium BC). Based on his intriguing findings, the author presents practical techniques to harness psychic powers and put them to use in winning at the poker table.

Hold'Em Poker for Advanced Players (Advance Player)

Hold'Em Poker for Advanced Players (Advance Player)Texas Hold ’em is not an easy game to play well. To become an expert you must balance many concepts, some of which occasionally contradict each other. In 1988, the first edition appeared. Many ideas, which were only known to a small, select group of players, were made available to anyone who was striving to become an expert, and the hold ’em explosion had begun. It is now a new century, and the authors have again moved the state of the art forward by adding over 100 pages of new material, including extensive sections on "loose games," and "short-handed games." Anyone who studies this text, is well disciplined, and gets the proper experience should become a significant winner. Some of the other ideas discussed include play on the first two cards, semi-bluffing, the free card, inducing bluffs, staying with a draw, playing when a pair flops, playing trash hands, desperation bets, playing in wild games, reading hands, and psychology.

Cowboys Full: The Story of Poker

Cowboys Full: The Story of Poker

From James McManus, author of the bestselling Positively Fifth Street, comes the definitive story of the game that, more than any other, reflects who we are and how we operate.

Cowboys Full is the story of poker, from its roots in China, the Middle East, and Europe to its ascent as a globalbut especially an Americanphenomenon. It describes how early Americans took a French parlor game and, with a few extra cards and an entrepreneurial spirit, turned it into a national craze by the time of the Civil War. From the kitchen-table games of ordinary citizens to its influence on generals and diplomats, poker has gone hand in hand with our national experience. Presidents from Abraham Lincoln to Barack Obama have deployed poker and its strategies to explain policy, to relax with friends, to negotiate treaties and crises, and as a political networking tool. The ways we all do battle and business are echoed by poker tactics: cheating and thwarting cheaters, leveraging uncertainty, bluffing and sussing out bluffers, managing risk and reward.

Cowboys Full shows how what was once accurately called the cheater’s game has become amostly honest contest of cunning, mathematical precision, and luck. It explains how poker, formerly dominated by cardsharps, is now the most popular card game in Europe, East Asia, Australia, South America, and cyberspace, as well as on television. It combines colorful history with firsthand experience from today’s professional tour. And it examines poker’s remarkable hold on American culture, from paintings by Frederic Remington to countless poker novels, movies, and plays. Braiding the thrill of individual hands with new ways of seeing poker’s relevance to our military, diplomatic, business, and personal affairs, Cowboys Full is sure to become the classic account of America’s favorite pastime.

Kill Phil: The Fast Track to Success in No-Limit Hold 'Em Poker Tournaments: Revised and Expanded Edition (Gambling Theories Methods)Thanks to television, the internet, and the incredible popularity of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, when Kill Phil was first published in 2006, tournament poker had become the richest sport in the world. Cash Games (How to Win at No-Limit Hold'em Money Games) Vol. 1

Cash Games (How to Win at No-Limit Hold'em Money Games) Vol. 1The first years of the poker boom were fueled by the interest in no-limit hold em tournaments. Recently, however, players have been gravitating to another, even more complex form of hold em no-limit cash games.

In Harrington on Cash Games: Volume I, Dan Harrington teaches you the key concepts that drive deep-stack cash game play. You ll learn how to tailor your selection of starting hands to your stack size, how to recognize the increasing deception value of supposedly weaker hands as the stack sizes increase, and how to use the concept of pot commitment to your advantage as the size of the pot grows. After laying out the general concepts behind deep-stack cash game play, Harrington shows you a complete strategy for post-flop play, and then teaches you the difference between post-flop play against a single opponent and post-flop play against multiple opponents. If you play no-limit hold em cash games, you need to read this book.

Dan Harrington won the gold bracelet and the World Champion title at the $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold em Championship at the 1995 World Series of Poker. And he was the only player to make the final table in 2003 (field of 839) and 2004 (field of 2,576) considered by cognoscenti to be the greatest accomplishment in WSOP history. 52 Ways to Cheat at Poker: How to Spot Them, Foil Them, and Defend Yourself Against Them

52 Ways to Cheat at Poker: How to Spot Them, Foil Them, and Defend Yourself Against ThemIt’s no news that cheating pervades American culture. Americans cheat on taxes, tests, sports and spouses. But the largest arena for cheating may be at the poker table! With an estimated 60-80 million Americans playing poker every week—for the highest stakes ever—you can be sure that not everyone is playing by the rules!

In this fascinating look at the card sharper’s art—from its origins in Renaissance Italy to the high-tech methods of today—sleight-of-hand and deception expert Allan Kronzek reveals 52 of the most diabolical scams ever invented. Codes and signaling systems, hidden cameras and miniature ear pieces, false cuts and shuffles, peeking and flashing, deck switches, instant stacks, marked cards, “location play,” and dozens of other devious devices are all in use today. In fact, cheating at cards may be the most under-reported crime in America.

Each chapter of 52 Ways zeroes in on a single cheating method, along with its variations and provides expert advice on how to spot and foil the scam (when possible!). You’ll learn the secrets of shade, flash, and juice— the subtlest marking systems; why cutting the cards doesn’t guarantee an honest deal, how a crooked dealer can instantly stack the flop in hold ‘em, why casino card rooms are not 100% safe, and how cheating crews crush the opposition without marked cards or sleight of hand.

Thoroughly illustrated and researched, and enlivened with a wealth of historical sidebars, 52 Ways to Cheat at Poker is essential reading for anyone who plays cards for money—or anyone interested in the ingenious ways cheats have dreamed up steal your money while appearing to do nothing at all.

The poker books I have read only devoted about ten pages on poker odds and expected you to memorize tables that seemed meaningless. The illustrations in this book will bring meaning and life to those tables. You will be able to make quick decisions about complicated problems. You will have more time to focus on other information, such as: tells, who is a weak player, who is a strong player, who is too aggressive, who will fold their blinds, who will protect their blinds, who will take advantage of the button (position) and who you can make a move against (bluff). Grand Prix de Paris Poker Tournament Results

horizontal rule

Surinder Sunar, a poker pro from the UK, won the 2004 Grand Prix de Paris Poker Tournament Championship, and the first place prize of €679,860 (about $831,060).  The excitement of the win was second only to the excitement of the daring daylight casino heist that took place on the final day of the poker tournament, July 20, underway at the elegant Aviation Club de France in Paris.

During a break in the Grand Prix de Paris poker tournament, two armed men wearing ski masks entered the Aviation Club and made the players and staff lie down on the floor while they robbed the casino.  French police later described the gunmen as "well informed" because it appeared that they knew the precise stations where the casino kept its cash.  The thieves collected about 76,000 euros ($92,902).

Upon exiting the Aviation Club de France, the casino robbery took a wrong turn as the thieves had somehow lost the keys to their getaway motorcycle.  So they stole a refrigerated truck.  Still, the pair managed to elude the pursuing police as well as a taxi driver who joined in the chase (until he realized the men were armed and then it didn't seem like such a good idea).  The truck was later found, absent the robbers and the cash.  Rumor is Inspector Clouseau is coming out of retirement to find the renegades.

The Grand Prix de Paris poker tournament resumed after the casino robbery.  The field was narrowed to the final table at which Surinder Sunar triumphed.  The top six players and their winnings were: Surinder Sunar (€679,860), Tony G (€339,930), Jim Overtman, (€203,960), Peter Roche (€135,970), Ben Roberts (€101,980), and Dave Colclough (€84,890).

The Grand Prix de Paris Poker Tournament is the first stop on the World Poker Tour and is followed by the Mirage Poker Showdown at the Mirage Hotel Las Vegas later in July.

World Series of Poker

horizontal rule

The World Series of Poker is one of the most prestigious poker tournaments in the world.  First played in 1970, the World Series of Poker has grown in popularity ever since.

The World Series of Poker draws many of the top poker pros, but it is not their exclusive domain.  Players come from all walks of life and most of the poker players are amateurs.  The World Series of Poker often sees many of those amateurs beating the pros.

The World Series of Poker actually consists of a number of poker tournaments of various poker games including Texas Holdem, Omaha, Razz, and Stud Poker.  There are also Lowball and Hi-Low split poker games.  The World Series of Poker typically has about 45 individual poker tournaments which begin the first week of June and end with the final day of the World Championship Event about mid-July.

The winner of each World Series of Poker tournament event is awarded a gold bracelet (which many players value more than the cash prize).  The cash prizes are substantial typically ranging in the low to mid six figures with the first place prize for last year's Championship event setting a new record at $5 million.  Poker tournament buy-ins generally range from $1,000 to $5,000 with the Championship tournament having a buy-in of $10,000.  Players can also get into the Championship tournament by winning World Series of Poker satellite tournaments.

Harrahs Casino also sponsors the World Series of Poker Tournament Circuit.  The circuit is comprised of various poker tournaments held at different Harrahs casino properties nationwide.  Poker tournament players earn points toward an invitation to the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions which is held shortly after the conclusion of the regular World Series of Poker tournaments.

Many of the World Series of Poker tournament final tables are taped and televised by ESPN.

As legend has it, the idea for the World Series of Poker has its genesis in a 1949 high-stakes poker tournament between Nicholas 'Nick the Greek' Dandolos and Johnny Moss which was arranged by Benny Binion. The tournament was held before a public audience and lasted five months. Dandolos and Moss went back and forth playing a variety of poker games. Ultimately Moss won all the money (an estimated $2 million).

In 1970, Benny Binion took this idea a step further and held another poker tournament, called it the World Series of Poker, and invited many of the top poker players of the day. The poker tournament champion was decided by a popular vote and Johnny Moss prevailed again.

The next year, 1971, the World Series of Poker was changed to an elimination format. The player left standing at the end with all of the chips was Johnny Moss, again World Champion. In 1972, Thomas 'Amarillo Slim' Preston won the tournament.

Since then, the World Series of Poker has had its share of drama and excitement.  In a story that should give every poker player hope, Jack Strauss came back to win one year after having lost all but one chip of his stake early in the poker tournament.  Proving that it is never too late to be great again, Stu Ungar picked up his third win after spending 17 years mostly out of competition.

One of the leading money winners in the World Series of Poker has been T. J. Cloutier.  Over the years, he has finished in the money in over 30 WSOP poker game events.  He has also won five first place WSOP gold bracelets in various events.  In the main Championship event of Texas Holdem, he has finished twice in second-place, and once each in third place and fifth place.

Billy Baxter, one of the other big names in poker, dominated the deuce-to-seven draw poker WSOP tournament for many years, with five first place finishes and two second place finishes.

Many other household poker names have graced the World Series of Poker over the years.  Names such as Mickey Appleman, Bobby Baldwin, Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Johnny Moss, and "Amarillo Slim" Preston.

These are the World Series of Poker Champions, winners of the main tournament event, no limit Texas Holdem.

Tunica Casinos

horizontal rule

Tunica Casinos are among the fastest growing group of casinos in the United States.  Tunica County saw its first casino in 1992, two years after the Mississippi Legislature authorized gaming in counties along the Mississippi River. Tunica is now one of the top US gaming destinations after Las Vegas and Atlantic City with more than 10 million annual visitors and one of the highest visitor satisfaction rates of any gaming destination.

Tunica is a happening place.  The gaming has a Las Vegas feel largely due to the involvement of two Las Vegas interests, Caesars Entertainment and Harrahs Entertainment, in development of the area.  The limits and odds seem a little better than Vegas.  For example, there are plenty of low limit tables even on weekends and it is not hard to find games such as double deck blackjack and craps with 10x odds.  The casino staff are friendly and live up to Mississippi's nickname of the 'Hospitality State.'

The Tunica Casinos

To get to the Tunica Casinos, follow highway 61 south from Memphis, Tennessee.  The first casino you will see is the Grand Casino Tunica, one of the largest casinos.  Continuing south on highway 61, you will come to Casino Center Drive and a group of four casinos - Ballys Casino Tunica, Sheraton Casino Tunica, Horseshoe Casino Tunica, and Gold Strike Casino.  Moving further south on 61, you will come across Fitzgeralds Casino which is located about a mile off the highway.  Further south along 61 is the final group of casinos on Casino Strip Resort Blvd. - Sams Town Casino Tunica, Harrahs Tunica Casino, and Hollywood Casino Tunica.

Poker at Tunica Casinos

There are some excellent Tunica Casino poker rooms dealing mostly Texas Holdem, Seven Card Stud, and Omaha.  Texas Holdem spreads generally range from $2-$4 to $20-$40, Seven Card Stud spreads from $1-$5 to $2-$10, and Omaha spreads from $3-$6 to $6-$12.  The most popular poker rooms are at the Gold Strike Casino, Grand Casino Tunica, Horseshoe Casino, Sams Town, and Hollywood Casino.  Daily poker tournaments can most frequently be found at the Gold Strike Casino and Grand Casino Tunica.

In January the popular World Poker Tour comes to Tunica with the Jack Binion World Poker Open which is co-sponsored by the Gold Strike Casino and Horseshoe Casino Tunica.

Recommended Non Gambling Activities

When taking a break from the casinos, there are some good local activities in the Tunica area.

Golfers will find three good local golf courses: River Bend Links Golf Course, Links at Cottonwoods Golf Course (one of the Golf Digest top 40 Casino Golf Courses), and Tunica National Golf and Tennis.

For spa experiences, take a look at the spas offered by the Grand Casino, Gold Strike Casino, and Horseshoe Casino.

The Tunica RiverPark offers a museum showcasing the Mississippi River and its history, an observation deck, aquariums with native aquatic life, and a 130 acre riverside forest with walking trails.  The Tunica Queen provides river excursions departing from the RiverPark daily.

For more outdoor activities, try the fishing and boating available at Tunica Lake, or the shooting and hunting activities at Willows Sporting Clays Center.

Also keep an eye on the current schedule for the Tunica Arena and Exposition Center which hosts various events throughout the year from rodeos and horse shows to demolition derbies.

In less than 30 minutes, Tunica guests can visit Memphis, Tennessee.  See Elvis Presley's Graceland, the Memphis Zoo, and a multitude of blues, jazz, and rock & roll nightclubs including the famous Beale Street with three blocks of restaurants, shops, and nightclubs.

Tunica Casinos offer Las Vegas style gambling
with a bit of the country life.
